A dental implant is a prosthetic replacement for a missing tooth. As we know natural tooth structure consists of a root and a tooth so in a dental implant procedure, we replace the root with an implant and replace the tooth with a crown or denture. It is that straight forward! The implant itself provides a strong foundation for the crown and it can be either fixed or removable. Dental implant procedures are carried out in the dental office in 1 or 2 stages.
Dental implants are predominantly made of titanium. Titanium is a metal that is bio-compatible (compatible with a living tissue or a living system that is not toxic, injurious, or physiologically reactive and is not rejected by the immune system). All in all it means that titanium offers the best strength and durability. Dental implants are made in different sizes to suit the gap to be filled.
Dental implants are the most popular option for teeth replacement as they are strong, stable, and they function like your own natural teeth. They give back the confidence and self esteem to smile again.
1. The implant device itself (which is placed directly into the bone)
2. The abutment piece that connects the implant device to the third part
3. The overlying crown or denture.
Dental implants are the best option for people who have missing teeth. They offer the best permanent solution for tooth replacement and is most beneficial in regard to oral care and hygiene.
Dental implants are and option for people who have:
Almost everyone is a candidate for dental implants unless there is an untreated disease of the teeth, gums, or bone. More than likely a dentist will not carry out the treatment until these problems have been treated as they can affect the success of the implant surgery. If you are considering having dental implants, and you think that you may have a dental problem, contact your dentist to schedule an oral exam. It only takes about 30 mins including x-rays. If you are considering having dental work abroad, it is a good idea to have a quick exam and an x-ray at your local dentist’s clinic before traveling. This will then rule out any problems that may prevent you from having the treatment abroad.
Commoncauses of tooth loss include poor dental care, illness, root inflammation, severe gum disease, lifestyle choices, or injury to your teeth. In some cases, some teeth might not develop properly due to genetic reasons. Therefore, gaps are formed between teeth, making it uncomfortable to eat or talk. Implants are the best permanent long - term option for teeth replacement. It provides a better solution compared to bridges and dentures.
When a natural root is lost and there is a gap, an implant is the ideal solution. The procedure for a dental implant is the same regardless of how many implants you need. When you have a dental bridge, the teeth on either side of the gap need to be cut down for the bridge to fit. Unlike a dental bridge, during a dental implant procedure the adjacent teeth are not affected. After the implant has been placed and has fused to the bone, and the healing period is, a crown is fitted over the implant abutment.
When you have multiple teeth missing together, an implant bridge can be used. The implant devices are put in just like a single implant, and then an implant bridge is placed. An implant bridge replaces the support lost as a result of missing teeth. It is placed from one implant to the other implant, and there is no need to drill any of the adjacent teeth. These dental implants are placed in strategic positions to replace the missing teeth. When the implants are stable, abutments can be attached to the implants that will connect the final bridge to the implants. An impression is made for the contours of the abutments or the position of the implant tops. The implant bridge is then made and placed using dental cement or screws.
If there are multiple teeth missing in different areas of the mouth, then single implants can be placed with crowns on top.
In the first option where all teeth are missing, a full set of implants can be placed. This would require a maximum of eight implants on the upper jaw and a minimum of six implants on the lower jaw. Two sets of fourteen crowns are then placed on the upper and lower jaws.
The second option is to have implants and a click denture. Four implants are usually placed on the lower jaw and four implants are placed on the upper jaw. Then a denture is placed using a click system. The denture is clicked on the implants, setting your dentures firmly in place. The denture (click system) can be removed so it’s easy to maintain.
Dental implants provide several advantages over other teeth replacement options. They function and look like natural teeth. And implant-supported full bridges or dentures are designed to be long lasting. They are also more comfortable and stable than conventional dentures, allowing you to retain a more natural biting and chewing capacity.
In addition, because implant-supported full bridges and dentures will replace some of your tooth roots, your bone is better preserved. With conventional dentures, the bone that previously surrounded the tooth roots begins to resorb (deteriorate). Dental implants integrate with your jawbone, helping to keep the bone healthy and intact.
In some cases, if teeth have been missing for a long period of time, the jawbone might have shrunken. Shrinkage of the bone on the upper jaw may cause sinuses fall. Therefore, a bone graft or sinus lift will need to be carried out before an implant procedure. This can be identified with an x-ray. This is one the reasons why it is a good idea to have an x-ray taken before you travel abroad for a dental implant treatment. Although you can get x-rays when you arrive at your destination, if you have it done sooner you can plan better.
When a tooth is missing for a long period (even if you are using a removable denture), it leads to significant decrease in the strength and thickness of the jawbone, which is called jawbone resorption. A dental implant is the only form of tooth replacement that prevents bone resorption. However, in order to successfully place the implant device, there has to be sufficient jawbone.
If there is not enough bone, or if the tissue is too soft for the implant to be placed, a bone graft is necessary. A bone graft is a replacement of missing bone. The dentist inserts synthetic bone into the area where the implant will be placed. Healing time is usually six to eight weeks. After the healing period, implants can be placed as described above.
Sinus lifting is required when there is insufficient bone available to securely place the dental implant. When upper back teeth are missing for a long period of time bone in that area naturally shrinks or resorbs. Your sinuses expand to occupy the empty space where the bone used to be. The sinuses must be lifted in order to create space for placing additional bone in that area. The bone is added between your jaw and maxillary sinuses.
Implants may be contraindicated if a patient is taking intravenous and oral bisphosphonates as this may put a patient at a higher risk for osteonecrosis. Osteonecrosis is a bone disease which results from the loss of blood supply to the bone.
Uncontrolled Type II diabetes is a significant relative contraindication as healing following any type of surgical procedure is delayed due to poor peripheral blood circulation.
There are many benefits and advantages of having dental implants:
Before having the procedure, a full oral examination is performed by your dentist. An x-ray is taken by either an OPG (panoramic x-ray) or a CT scan. These x-rays are used to analyze the density of the bone and tissue where the implant will be placed. Local anesthesia is usually adequate for this procedure, but for patients who are very nervous and anxious other forms of sedation is also available.
Remember to eat and drink fluids (non alcoholic) as normal before all procedures, do not miss breakfast and take all of your medications at normal times.
An incision is made into the gum and a hole is drilled into the jawbone. Depending on the density of the bone your dentist will choose the best length for the implant device. Then incision is closed. If you already use a denture, you will continue to use it during the healing process. Sometimes the dentist may not close the gum and place an abutment directly on to the implant. A temporary crown might be placed or the current dentures might be adjusted to fit temporarily.
The healing time is usually 8 to 12 weeks. During the healing period, the implant device fuses to the bone and acts like a tooth root. Upon successful osseointegration, which is the structural connection that forms between your natural jawbone and the titanium implant, the next stage of the procedure starts.
The gum is re-opened to expose the implant. Then an abutment is screwed and tightened to the implant using special dental equipment. After this is done, a temporary crown is placed onto the abutment. The abutment needs to be protected from chewing forces to ensure successful healing. The temporary crown is used for a few days until the permanent crowns are ready.
After stage 1, when the implant device has been placed, the typical healing period is 8 to 12 weeks. During this time osseointegration takes place. The implant fuses to the bone and is ready to act a root and a strong foundation for the crown or denture.
After the crown or denture has been placed, some sensitivity might be experienced. Pain killers can be taken. Pain should subside after 2 - 3 days.
Swelling is normal after an implant and can be worse in the morning after lying flat throughout the night. Swelling usually subsides after 48 hours and can be reduced with ice packs. Place them on the cheek for 10 minutes at a time with a 15 - minute break.
I would strongly recommend this dentist to anyone
My Name is Anthony Hicks and I am an American Citizen, living in Berlin, Germany for the past 20 years and have chosen to have all my dental work done with Tourmedical in Kusadasi turkey.
I just like yourself had so may questions and fears about going to another Country and dentist to have my dental work done. At the end of the day I am very pleased and extremely happy with the work and treatment that I have received.
Before I even got started with my treatment I felt comfortable after talking by phone to a very friendly lady named Majella, the patient co-ordinator about what I thought I needed done to my teeth. Majella gave me a quote and told me the dentist will give me a thorough examination and then an exact treatment plan will be drawn up.
I arrived at Izmir Airport amd was greeted by Majella and her husband Omer, the driver, and what a safe and well informed driver he is. They both answered all my questions concerning Kusadasi and surrounding areas. I was taken to my hotel and found it to be very comfortable and clean with a wonderful friendly staff plus a beautiful view of the Aegean Sea. If for any reason, I needed help or guidance the staff at the hotel were very willing to help.
I got to meet my dentist and the rest of the staff the next day. My xray was taken and then I sat with her and she asked me what I wanted her to do for me. I told her and she pointed out what could be done which was a lot more than I had thought, but deep down, I knew my dental situation was not good and knew that every thing she said was true. I am so happy with the result as are my family and friends and they are amazed at how natural my new teeth look. I can say that Dr Elcin worked on my mouth as if it was a piece of art work and I can honestly say today it looks like a master piece.
The dental clean was immaculately clean and i put on plastic blue over shoes as I entered the clinic, as you would if you were entering an operating room!! I was very impressed with the hygiene and how bright the clinic was and the state of the art equipment.
I took my time and researching before choosing Tourmedical an excellent website that is very informative . I have as today 16 implants and 28 zirconium crowns and no residual pain, very amazing. I would strongly recommend this dentist to anyone. I am very very happy not only with the affordable cost but the care, concern and attention I received throughout my treatment by all of the dental team and next year my wife will also have her teeth done.
Thanks to all the team.
Everybody was fantastic
After much research on the internet, as i travelled from Australia to Turkey with my family on holiday, i have nothing to say, except that everybody was fantastic. I got first class treatment and can highly recommend tourmedical cosmetic dental holidays to other people.
I can highly recommend Tourmedical Cosmetic Dental to everybody
My teeth were in very bad condition, and as i work with the public, the time came for me to do something about it. As Ireland was much too expensive for me, I searched the web and found Tourmedical cosmetic holidays, I was very pleased with my 1st point of contact, who was very informative and friendly. I booked my holiday to Kusadasi and was collected from my hotel that evening for my consultation, where my exact planning was done. I needed dental implants, so my appointment day and time was arranged. I was very nervous, but foundthe dentist and her assistants very professional and caring. Their Implant surgeon, was excellent, he was very professional and explained what he was going to do and began the procedure, I didnt feel a thing and was over really quick. I then had to wait 2 months for my implants to fuse with my bone to make them strong enough for my new teeth. I had a temporary denture in the meantime, so could still get on with my life. When i was ready to come back, i contacted them and my appointments were arranged and I was collected for every appointment and taken to the beautiful clinic, which i was really happy to be going back to, all my nerves were gone. Ive now completed my treatment and have a beautiful smile that I thought id never have again. 2nd time round i was treated by the cosmetic dentist and she was brillant, she knew exactly what type of teeth would suit me and I can highly recommend Tourmedical cosmetic dental holidays for any dental problems you may have.
My dental situation was in a bad way from years of neglet, my daughter in law googled dentistry abroad and came across Tourmedical Cosmetic Dental holidays. We were really impressed with the efficency of everything, all our questions were answered and our consultation apt was made. We were collected from our hotel and taken to their clinic, which was exactly like we had seen from pictures on the website. The dentist was excellent, after my xray was taken, she went through everything in detal with me and explained all the options to me. Dental implants was the best long term option for me, so my treatment began. Their implant surgeon performed my procedure and he was very informative all the way through and before i knew it, my implants were placed. Im already looking forward to my 2nd step, when i will have my new smile!!!
It was the best thing I have ever done
Firstly I have to say I am a very nervous patient and really scared of the dentist, but am proud to say I have come out the other side. Ive completed my treatment now and have to say found the whole procedure as comfortable as possible. From my first point of contact with Toumedical – I was made to feel at ease and guided the whole way. The clinic and technology they have is amazing, I have never been in a place so clean and hygienic. The Cosmetic Dentist is so caring and nice. In my job, your appearance is everything, so I had to be sure I was going to have a perfect smile & the best result. I felt confident from the beginning from our consultation conversation, that the dentist knew what she was doing & I was going to have the Hollywood smile I dreamed of and here I am smiling now to show the world.
